Snowflakes on my window
Evolution is the new topic we will explore in my biology class this week. Tough topic to throw at teenagers. It is very difficult to grasp hundreds, thousands, millions, and billions of years. I often use a great analogy my father has shared with me..."In comparison to the size of the earth, amount of species on earth, or age of the earth, our life is like a grain of sand on a beach or a snowflake in a pile of snow. Yes, each individual is so unique and important, but yet so tiny and insignificant at the same time." Really makes you think :).
I aim for my students to understand the basics of evolution according to the Biology Benchmarks for the State of Michigan. This will give them a good foundation to form their own opinions on the topic. It is difficult to explain and validate this topic when there are many non-believers. I am sure they will have many opinions and hopefully these will too evolve throughout their life.
With that thought, I am sure this site will continue to evolve... starting today with a few tab changes and a focus on this blog. I listened to a great podcast (as always) by Kimberly Wilson. Been listening to her podcast for years... so great! Her guest this week, Leela Cyd, was wonderful and has inspired me to post more pictures on here... I love photography so why not share it.
